# Working with Indent in Slack

Once Slack is connected, you work with Indent the way you'd work with a teammate who's in the
channel: mention it, hand it a task, and it replies in a thread. To connect your workspace first,

## Mention Indent in a channel

In any channel Indent is in, mention `@indent` with your request. Indent replies in a thread on your
message and keeps the back-and-forth there, so it stays out of the main channel.

If Indent isn't in the channel yet, add it with `/invite Indent`, then mention it.

Editing an existing message to add `@indent` counts as a mention.

## Keep mentioning Indent in the thread

In a channel, Indent reads only the messages that mention it. Reply in the thread with `@indent`
each time you want it to act. The first time you reply in one of its threads without mentioning it,
Indent posts a one-time reminder and doesn't repeat it.

Everyone who takes part in the thread is part of the session: the people who post in it, and anyone
mentioned in it. Indent can tell who asked for what.

## Direct message Indent

Send Indent a direct message to start a one-on-one session. A direct message with Indent is always a
private session, visible only to you — good for work you'd rather not put in a shared channel.

## Teammates who don't have an Indent account

If your organization signs people up automatically by email domain, a teammate who mentions Indent
for the first time gets an account there and then, and Indent answers straight away.

Everyone else gets a sign-up prompt, and Indent holds their message. Once they sign in and link
their Slack account, Indent picks up what they asked for.

## Move to the web app

Slack is the right place to kick something off, but a long or detailed task is easier to follow in
the web app, where file edits, query results, and pull requests render inline. When Indent starts a
session from Slack, its last message links to that session on
[app.indent.com](https://app.indent.com). Open the link to watch the work step by step and keep
going there.

The session is the same one either way — anything you or a teammate does in Slack or on the web is
