# Connecting Beeper

Indent connects to your Beeper account through Matrix. Each person connects their own Beeper Matrix
ID, then messages `@indent:indent.com` from Beeper.

## Connect Beeper

1. **Find your Beeper Matrix ID**

   In Beeper, open **Settings** and select your name. Copy the ID ending in `:beeper.com`, such as
   `@alice:beeper.com`.
2. **Connect your Matrix ID to Indent**

   Open the [Matrix personal
   integration](https://app.indent.com/settings/integrations/personal/matrix). Enter your Beeper
   Matrix ID and select **Connect**.
3. **Start a direct message with Indent**

   In Beeper Desktop or Beeper for Android, start a new chat and search for `@indent:indent.com`.
   Send your request in the new conversation.

Beeper currently supports starting a Matrix direct message on desktop and Android. See
[Using Matrix Chats in Beeper](https://help.beeper.com/using-matrix-chats-in-beeper) for Beeper's
current platform instructions.

Each teammate who wants to message Indent from Beeper must connect their own Beeper Matrix ID to
their Indent account.

## Work with Indent in Beeper

In a direct message, send a request without mentioning Indent. Reply in the same thread to continue
the session. A new top-level message starts another session. Direct-message sessions are private and
visible only to you.

To work in a shared, invite-only Matrix room, add `@indent:indent.com` as a participant. Mention
Indent in a new message to start a session. Replies in that thread continue the same session without
another mention. The session is visible to your Indent organization.

Indent adds an 👀 reaction while it works and a ✅ reaction when it finishes. React with 🛑 to the
first message in the thread to stop the current run. Replies can include files and images. Each
reply links to the same session in the Indent web app.

## Continue in the web app

Open the session link in Indent to inspect tool calls, file changes, and other work that Beeper does
not render inline. You can continue the same session from Beeper or the web app.

When Indent needs you to answer a question or approve an action, it posts a link in Beeper. Complete
the action in the web app.

## Limits

Indent reads text messages from Beeper. Files and images that you send in Beeper are not added to
the session.

## Troubleshooting

If Indent does not reply:

- Confirm that **Settings → Personal integrations → Matrix** shows the same `@username:beeper.com`
  ID as your Beeper account.
- Include the leading `@` when you search for `@indent:indent.com`.
- Mention Indent in the first message of a shared room thread.
- If Indent asks you to link your Matrix ID, open the link, save the prefilled ID, and send your
  request again.
